If you have a rear main seal that’s leaking, is it leaking oil or transmission fluid?

A rear main seal is the engine.  The trans and engine usually have to be separated.  When I need to replace the engine rear main seal because of an oil leak, I always replace the transmission input shaft seal just for quality at the same time.

"Main" seals are on the engine crankshaft.

If it's actually the RMS leaking then it's engine oil. However transmission pump or input shaft leaks will show up in the same place (bell housing). So further investigation is needed to find the cause.

RMS leaks are very common. Transmission leaks are generally rare.
