Dear Scott,
My name is Timothy Henegar, and I live in Blacksburg, VA near VA Tech. I have a 2003 Kia Sorento with 215,000 miles on it. I have had this vehicle for a while now and love it. I am getting ready to do some DIY maintenance on it and was trying to figure out the code readings
P0303
P0431
P0421
P0700
P0707
In looking up the codes I know there is a misfire on Cylinder 3, a mention about the crankshaft sensor going bad, the catalytic converter needs to be replaced, I know the O2 sensor also needs replacing, and the transmission range sensor or switch is reading low.
Also I noticed the thermostat tends to overheat and consumes a lot of coolant. So here is what I am wondering, is best to replace the radiator hose, air filter, and thermostat as well as O2 sensor myself.
Then let the mechanic replace the catalytic converter, crankshaft sensor, and also the transmission switch along with doing a tune up as well for a game plan on working on the Sorento?
Sincerely,
Timothy Henegar
I'd proceed in this order:
1) Do a combustion gas test on the coolant system.
2) If the combustion gas test passes then address the cylinder 3 misfire.
3) Clear the codes and if the P07xx codes return, replace the transmission range sensor.
4) Only after doing the first 3 steps wait to see if the catalytic converter codes return and if they do then troubleshoot their causes.
((you didn't post any codes which would point to a faulty crankshaft position sensor))

the catalytic converter needs to be replaced
Why do you say that? Have you done sufficient troubleshooting to determine that's the case?
