I'm thinking of buying a Jeep Wrangler and I would like to know up to what year is it safe to buy that is still quality?
- DaimlerChrysler (1998-2007)
- Chrysler LLC (2007–2009)
- Chrysler Group LLC (2009–2014)
A model with the 4.0 inline six would be preferable. Last year for those was 2006.
1990, last year carburetor available.
Over a 20 year period I owned a couple of AMC Eagles with the same carburated 258 six used in Jeeps, with its electronic feedback carb and miles of vacuum lines and gadgetry used to control emissions. Now have a '99 Cherokee with the 4.0. Having dealt with both I would take the 4.0 any day of the week.
This is what an engine compartment with an AMC/Jeep 1980s-1990 258 six looks like (air cleaner removed):

This is what a 4.0 six's engine compartment looks like:

Which would you rather work on?
The best 4.0 engines are pre-2001 49-state models that don't have the crazy triple-catalyst , quadruple O2 sensor emission system. Model years 2000-2001 had a weak cylinder head design prone to cracking, so that's something to watch out for.
I'd keep it 03 & earlier.
