Should I buy a used minivan as my first car?

Hello. I am interested in getting a minivan as a first car because of their versatility, but I often run into the issue of them having 200,000+ miles, having an accident on record, or the owner stating a major problem with the vehicle such as slipping transmission or blown head gasket. How can I find a decent minivan for a first vehicle? My top pick is the Toyota Sienna, but I would be happy with a Chrysler Town and Country or Dodge Grand Caravan if the price is reasonable and it checks out with my local mechanic.

Let your friends and family know you look for a good van. If you know an honest local mechanic, ask him if he knows someone wants to sell theirs (if it is in a good shape). It takes time to find a good one, especially in this market.

Assuming you’re going to be driving alone in your first car, have you tried folding down the back seats in a sedan?
