Used/New car purchase advice

Good morning again car gurus.  I'm looking for a commuter car, and I'm sold on a Toyota product thanks to this forum.  I will be commuting a total of about 105 miles daily, and I ONLY care about reliability and gas mileage.  I grapple with buying a new corolla hatchback manual transmission at a $21k price tag vs. the following.  I know you can't tell much from pictures and I will have a mechanic look at whatever used car I purchase.  I just started looking and I'm NOT in a hurry.

As always I thank you for your help and time.

Respectfully,

John

It seems overpriced, very overpriced. They can be great cars but even here in California with the highest prices it costs like 7-8k not 11k.

  • Mileage: 81,188 It isn't low enough to justify the price difference in my opinion

Even the infalted KBB value is $7500-$9500 so if you are sold on the vehicle 1. have a mechanic check it out shoot for below 8k. Using KBB, I'd stick to the trade in value which is $6500-$7500 (and honestly even that seems inflated).

Just to be clear the car itself is great I saw one at a dealer a couple years back and it was pretty nice especially in the S trim.

fyi the EPA fuel economy is 29 MPG 27 33 combined city/hwy and the average driver mpg is 38.1 for the 2013 Corolla S manual.

Both are excellent cars if the mechanic gives you ok. Despite all the benefits you can get with buying a brand new one, it has a disadvantage : Depreciation. So, you better off buying a car which is couple of years old but well taken care off. Also, if you can drive manual, compared to automatic ones, they can get better gas milage and in the case of Toyota, they are very dependable and pretty much indestructible. The repair cost for them is much cheaper than automatic ones and you can have more fun with the car too.

Thank you very much for your help and advice, I appreciate it.

There’s also less technology on the older Corolla which in one sense is better as less things to break.

You can see here for some issues reported over the years (not comprehensive but offers a glimpse):

Thank you as well, I appreciate the help and advice.

Great choice with a manual.  Should be about $9K.  For a ten year old car, are you sure it's 22,000 and not 122,000 miles?

Mileage: 81,188
It is 22,000 BELOW MARKET according to KBB.

26950 below markeg
