Why is it that people are paying so much for Toyota Tacomas and 4Runners, even if it’s a base model without the V6?
As others have stated, they have a very strong track record of reliability. Our 05 4Runner has almost 150K miles on her and she shows no signs of problems. Literally, oil changes, tranny fluid changes, air filters etc, absolutely no break downs. So, I have no intention of selling my runner, especially with sky high prices of anything new or remotely new...and I have a strong hunch that many, many others feel the same way. So, there are not that many on the market to buy and as others have stated, little supply + strong demand = high prices. It sucks, nobody wants to pay $10k for a used 15 year old 4Runner with 130k on the clock.

Beacause they are quality vehicles that can last hundreds of thousands of miles if well maintained. You get what you pay for.
I agree that Tacomas and 4Runners are but a few of the best vehicles on the road in terms of quality, I even think they’re a bit over priced. I think is the reputation that precedes them.
You are correct. And the market determines price accordingly. Do I think they are priced high? Yes. But if people are buying them at those prices, that tells me the market will bear it. It is just too much for me to spend personally.
Reputation, legendary reliability, resale value, just what the market is willing to pay, and Scotty keeps recommending them (j/k).
Hype
Cough, Tesla, cough.
After performing a search on autotrader (in my local area) for similar year & miles, I discovered that the price of the Nissan Frontier or Honda Ridgeline is not much less. The Ford Ranger prices are about 22% to 28% less depending on mileage and condition.
