Valve cover gaskets

Topic starter

Planning to adjust valves on 2001 honda crv (if ever I have a surge of ambition).

Any thoughts on the best place to purchase new gaskets?

Autozone has a complete set of "Mahle" for $38. Does that sound about right?

Also, is there any need for sealant?  Black RV was suggested in the past for improved gasket sealing.

The vehicle isn't long for this world, so no need for a top tier product.

Thanks!

NEVER use a sealant on top of the valve cover gasket. It will cause the gasket to sit unevenly and will cause more problems. ONLY apply a small dab of sealant: 1) on the inside of the valve cover if your gasket is not holding in place when you flip it upside down and/or 2) on any joints where the engine block has two "sandwiched" aluminum castings together (i.e the metal timing chain cover bolts onto the engine block, so you would add some sealer where those two pieces meet on top).

As for the gasket, I would get the OEM or OEM quality gasket.

Thanks much! I will check the OEM prices.

The engine crankcase (all the cavities inside) should not experience significant pressures. Nor is the valve cover submerged. You do not need sealant. Plain rubber gaskets are just fine. You do not want bits of broken sealant running around the inside of your engine.

Thanks! Hadn't thought of the sealant loose in the engine.
