Valve cover leak causing catalytic converters to fail?

My brother recently got an 06 4runner with a known cat issue. All 4 had failed. We noticed a leak on the passenger side valve cover so we are replacing both sides gaskets. There was also some oil on the passenger side spark plugs. More oil was on the plug nearest to the leak. I know if oil gets in the cats that can cause them to fail. Just curious if a valve cover leak could get oil in them.

The oil leaks you are describing let oil OUT of the engine. The kind of oil leaks that damage catalytic converters are those where the oil leaks INTO the engine's combustion chambers - through the rings or valve guides or such.

But put new valve cover gasket on too...many reasons including it affects A/F ratio (non-meter air ingress).
