Hey Scotty and others,
Car Info:
- 2003 Volvo S60 AWD 2.5T
- 158k miles
- Auto “Geartronic” (AW55)
- No dash lights. All maintenance has been done. (timing/throttle bodies 100, all belts 100, suspension 130, coolant 150, plugs 150, exhaust 150, transmission fluid 150, regular oil changes, fuel filter every 50)
- Runs great. PCV sucks pressure, turbo spools, trans shifts smooth, no leaks! Starts right up.
The story:
I have no all wheel drive and no service lights on the dash. I had the AOC serviced with fresh fluid and gaskets. The mechanic said the pump was fine and no shavings came out. I had the fluid partially changed on my transfer case(/angle gear/bevel gear/front diff). The AWD does not work. The traction light comes on (notifying you the AWD should be kicking in), but nothing happens and the front tires spin forever. No warning lights. The transfer case is NOT leaking, I garage park it and there is nothing on my floor in the morning. If there were a leak, it’s nothing big.
I’m 99% sure it is the angle gear unit itself, due to some sort of internal failure. Do you agree this is the problem?
I’m pretty sure I need a new unit (angle gear) but it’s too much money for me to spend at a shop (2 grand!!!). I’ve already dumped tons of money into this car for maintenance.
I could get a decent unit with low miles for like 400 bucks with a warranty from a reputable place.
My question is: is it possible for me to change out my angle gear in my driveway, with simple tools? (This is my daily, so high stakes involved.)
Thanks!!
It is not very easy to change that gear in the driveway yourself that's a professional mechanic job I would just drive it myself until it crap and then junk it those are endless money pits when they start having problems like that anyway
