Dear Scotty,

I live on the border of US and Mexico.

I love Toyota and have had tundras, 4-runners, Lexus, etc. I have always wanted to own the Hilux after seeing how indestructible they appear to be.  (We cant buy it on the US side because of bureaucratic BS.) The diesel is 2.8L and has considerable torque. It is always on Australian, African shows as being a great truck. I can buy one as a Mexican business and drive it in the USA.

#1 Isn't the Hilux just a Tacoma with huevos?

#2 I would like your comments about the Hilux Diesel? Any mechanical issues?

This is the website:

Ps. I am waiting for one because of the chip shortage stuff.

thanks

The Hilux is equivalent to Tacoma. The issue is about the parts and fixes, you will pay way more money to fix that car, since not too many people know how to work on them.

The old Hilux was indestructible,

on the new ones it’s just a marketing trick. Where I live it was marketed as the “Hilux invincible”

The 2.8L “1GD” is nothing like the old 2.8 “L3” and 2.4L “22R”.

The new one is very efficient but reliability wise it’s about the same or maybe slightly weaker then their competition from Isuzu (still makes the legendary J series) and Mitsubishi (the new 4N15 is quite troublesome but if you maintain it well it can outlast by quite a big margin even the Toyota)

-
realistically that new fancy tiny diesel engine lasts only about 150k miles if you use your truck for towing or if you ever put any kind of meaning load on the powertrain.

Just get the Tacoma even the small TR engine is wayyyy better then what you’ll find in the Hilux.

I agree with @yaser & @dan

The new 2.8L engine has had a few issues, I’d wait & watch its track record before you  spend your hard earned money on it.

As with anything (even Toyota), always wait & watch when it comes to new engine/transmission technology -
