Water Under Hood when it rains

Scotty I have a 2012 Chevy Malibu 2.4L 99,000 miles. I bought 6.5 years ago. Believe or not it's been trouble free except for the steering angle position sensor. I fell within the 10 year coverage for the sensor so it was changed by a dealership no charge. Now the question I have that I haven't been able to get an answer for online. Is it a common problem for water to get under the hood when it rains on this Malibu? It some how comes in mostly on the passengers side where the air filter box is located. It sits in the slotted edge of the filter box. Some gets in the box but doesn't make it past the filter.

where is it coming from?  Are all your inner fender pieces intact? lower skirting and air dams at the front?

That's the problem I don't know where it's coming from. Yes everything is intact. I bought the car when it was 5 years old and there's no sign that the hood was ever off. Nothing's missing in the cowl area. One person on a Malibu form website said his is the same way but he didn't have a solution. It shows about 800 people looked at my post and I got 1 response.

When that Chevy has a (chrome) strip attached in the midline of the hood, it could be -when that strip is attached using rivets o.a,-, the holes for these are letting water entering.

I had that in an unrelated car myself.

My car doesn't have a chrome strip on the hood.  It only gets water in on the fender sides. I wish I new how to attach a picture of the air filter cover slots with water in them. The air filter box is partly under the passengers side fender.

See the READ THIS FIRST - Forum guide topic near the top of the main page and your wish will be granted.

On cars I know of, the downwards edge of the hood, when closed, lands in a sort of gutters that are part of the front wings.

Water landing on the hood flows to left and right and lands in those gutters and flows away to the front of the car.

When these gutters are blocked by crud, or have rusted holes in them, the water can land into the engine compartment.

Hope you are able to post pictures.

as someone who lives in a rainforest, car leaks are a common thing. I talked to a dealership mechanic once who specialized in repairing leaks on the side, and I asked why it was such a common problem, and why weather sealing was so often done poorly. He explained that, simply, cars were designed, made and sold mostly in dryer areas. It's not a problem for most people, and they just don't care about the minority of owners like me.

Anyway, you may have to get creative. Go to one of those carwashes with a pressure washer, and just blast your car. Open the hood, check. Keep doing that and blasting different areas.

I just had to drive my Malibu in the pouring rain. As soon as I got in the garage I popped the hood water must be coming in the edges of the hood. Like I said they mounted the air filter box as far under the fender lip as it can go. I would really like to hear from other Malibu owners that are close to a 2012 year model. Do they have the same issue as I do?
