Hi Scotty,
I love your show, and I have learned so much! We live in the Caribbean and enjoy your fun videos!
My brother has a 2009 Toyota Rav4 with 88,000 miles. Lately, he's been having trouble with the transmission, which behaves in a very weird manner. In order for the vehicle to go into Drive, he must warm up the vehicle first, but he finds it works best and most quickly by warming it up in the reverse gear.
If he makes a stop that requires him to turn off the vehicle, he will have to go through the same warm-up procedure. If he reverses, he must shift back into Drive right away or the vehicle will not move forward. He finds that when he changes the transmission fluid and filter, the transmission will function normally for about two weeks, but the problem will eventually reoccur. He said once he goes through the warm-up procedure, the vehicle drives like normal.
He took the vehicle to a transmission guy, who didn't want to inspect the transmission and just recommended he rebuild or change the transmission. Other mechanics have said the same thing, but none of them have given their opinion as to what's going wrong and what parts might be the problem.
What do you think this could be, Scotty? He was wondering whether it was a solenoid issue or some part that I can't at this time recall. Any input will be appreciated! Thanks!
Regards,
Kevin
p.s. Just out of curiosity, you said you were once working on a Ph.D. In what field or discipline were you seeking to obtain the Ph.D?
Well my PhD was in anthropology. As for your problem those actually had two types of problems one was the transmission control module the computer had faults the other was the transmission themselves would wear out. Unfortunately the only people that can really check this out of the Toyota dealers if there are any in your area try that
