When I first start my car in the morning or anytime cold there is a loud rattle from the engine. It then goes away after about 15 seconds. 173,000 miles. oil at around 2500 miles.

high mileage engine. If it goes away quickly then don't worry too much.

Your timing chain, tensioner and guides need replacing, and real soon.
No timing chain it has a timing belt

It might be due to the lack of lubrication during cold start, since it goes away, I would not worry about it, but if it bothers you, you can add some Lucas oil additive for the next oil change to help the situation.
