What could be the source of my electrical issue?

2006, v6 Mustang - about 108K miles - over the past year I've had some issues arise regarding the starting of the car and the battery.

Typically this is what happens

  1. I unlock it, get in - all the lights are on as they should be,
  2. put the key and turn to the first knock - radio/CD turns on, air kicks on, and everything is running smoothly
  3. turn the key further for ignition and one of two things happens
    1. Normal start
    2. The car goes dead - sometimes the battery kicks back on with the usual signs like the radio is reset. Other times I have to pop the hood and just bump/touch the battery and it kicks back on power wise.

The alternator was replaced a couple of years ago.

Is this an issue with the battery, ignition, or something else?

Additionally, I've had this occur on cold starts and warm starts.

Are the battery terminals verified tight/snug?

Well of course and the battery load testing but you'll also have to check all the wiring could be looser corroded wiring could even be a bad ignition switch or starter starting to go out. You really have to test absolutely everything but start with the battery that's the easiest thing to test then look for corroded or loose wiring
