I have a 2011 Kia Sorento with a 2.4L 4 cylinder engine with All Wheel Drive. It has 336,000 miles on it. When it is in Reverse and Drive it shakes. Sometimes the engine wants to quit running in Reverse and Drive. It does it worse when it is at operating temperature. The engine runs fine in Park and neutral. I scanned it for codes and there is no codes. I don't know if it is an engine problem or a transmission problem that is causing the engine to shake when in Reverse and Drive.
I didn't have a pre-purchase inspection. They wanted $2,000 for it and it ran good when I bought it and the body is excellent shape. So I thought $2,000 was a good deal considering how much expensive used cars is.
A car could look good on the outside and then it’ll be junk on the inside. That’s why, for future reference, always have a good mechanic check out any used car prior to purchase. You don’t know if it has been wrecked, flooded, stolen, etc. Unless a mechanic inspects it with his fancy scan tool.
Long Term Fuel trim was 10.938% and the short term fuel trim was -7.812%. It changes a lot and once it said the Long Term Fuel Trim was 13.281% and the Short term fuel trim was -14.844%. The guy I bought it from said it had an intake manifold leak.
Scotty does not usually answer follow-up questions. Well. that data is showing your fuel trims are way off. Did the intake manifold leak show up during the pre-purchase inspection? It sounds to me like you have a failed intake manifold gasket. Being that you’re getting fuel trim issues (that will also cause hesitation issues in your car if it’s running lean or rich) and that previous owner suspected a leak there. Pull off the intake manifold and you will see a gasket. If that gasket shows any types of cracks then you know it needs replacing. Here is a link of how to do this on your specific vehicle: https://charm.li/Kia/2011/Sorento%202WD%20L4-2.4L/Repair%20and%20Diagnosis/Engine%2C%20Cooling%20and%20Exhaust/Engine/Intake%20Manifold/

So I thought $2,000 was a good deal considering how much expensive used cars is. I have had it for a year now with no issues until this started. I know that to check for an intake manifold leak you can spray carb cleaner with the engine running and if it revs up, then there is a vacuum leak. I will check that next. Thanks for the information.
Well, whatever it is the answer is old age. Now if it's an automatic transmission, the drag from the torque converter as the age will often make it shake then. As will an engine that doesn't run perfectly. Say worn fuel injectors. Worn piston rings with a compression is low. And of course broken motor or transmission mounts. So you start with the simple things like checking for broken mounts cuz if they're cracked, you jacked the engine up a little and if the cracks you'll see the engine raising. You'll see the motor mounts are all cracked in half. And if you can't figure it out if you're anywhere near Rhode Island, I check them out free during the weekdays and I can tell you what's wrong cuz it can get really complicated having to analyze live data from the computer to see what's wrong
@scottykilmer The car does make a weird sound under it when it is in any gear. It sounds like something sucking in air where the transmission is. I done a compression test and cylinder 1 was 195 psi, cylinder 2 was 185 psi, cylinder 3 was 190, and cylinder 4 was 195. It has the original ignition coils. One of them recently quit working completely. I replaced it and it quit misfiring. With the engine running I took one ignition coil out at a time and I connected a test light to the negative side of the battery and held the test light at the end of the coil and the spark was orange instead of blue. The new one I put in from Oreilly Auto Parts had a blue spark. I have a scan tool that reads some live data and the Long Term Fuel trim was 10.938% and the short term fuel trim was -7.812%. It changes a lot and once it said the Long Term Fuel Trim was 13.281% and the Short term fuel trim was -14.844%. The guy I bought it from said it had an intake manifold leak.
