What is this clicking noise in my steering wheel while I'm driving??

Hey Scotty and fellow members,

Last week, my girlfriend and I bought a 2007 Saturn Ion 3 Model from a used car lot. We purchased it for $2,000 out the door with an as-is warranty. It has 178,000 miles on it and has 2.4L in it. 5-speed manual transmission.

To be completely honest, it is a great vehicle. Aside from having to put new tires in it, I've just given it a standard tune-up since the purchase.

The other day, the steering wheel makes a knocking, clicking-like sound while you are driving it. I notice it happens when you make an abrupt turn, or especially when you are parking (so continuous motion). It almost sounds like what you hear when you turn on your turn signal, but will also sound sometimes when the turn signal is already going.

I have never experienced anything like this before on any other vehicle and I am wondering what is causing it, and whether or not we should be concerned. It does not affect the steering mobility or drivability whatsoever. Just more than anything-very concerning. I hope that I have provided enough helpful explanation for right now.

Thank you so much for any help you can throw my way!

I have hooked up an OBDII and have not received anything that could help me. Just a P0442 code for a small emission system leak, and a P0833 regarding an issue with the clutch pedal switch "B" circuit

Your Ion 3 is front wheel drive. In my experience clicking noises while turning has usually means the offending cv axle needs to be replaced, and could also be combined with front suspension issues as Yaser pointed out, and yes Scotty does have a video on that 🙂 Good Luck

Thank you I will have to look into that. I was trying to research some forums the other day, and was suggested to check the bottom plastic panel at the steering column? Sounded kind of far-fetched but at this point I think more of safety than the noise you know?

Can you help point me in the right direction as to where to find the video you are referring to? Thank you so much

Check the front suspension. Scotty has a video on that. It could also be the steering column that needs some grease.

Thanks yaser will do!
Im curious to see this video you are referring to
