Scotty,
I'm curious what your opinion, as an experienced mechanic, is on my car. It's a 1998 Nissan Maxima, automatic, 4dr. When I bought it, in May 2019, it had 6 miles shy of 167,000 miles on it. No mechanical issues. Paid $1,200 for it, from my cousin. The check engine light, was for the O2 sensor. I replaced the valve cover gasket, because it had a minor leak of oil(not enough to drip on the ground). Last March, I got the O2 sensor replaced, so I could get it inspected and registered(finally had the money, after paying tickets). Last May, I was finally able to replace the front struts(went with the entire assembly), got alignment for all 4 wheels(good thing I did, they told showed me the tires had tread separation), new tires. It currently has 184,600 miles on it. This month, I replaced the 7yr old battery. Waiting for a neighbor to jump start my car once was enough for me to decide to replace it, especially after I realized how old it is. I make sure to have the oil changed regularly, every 3,000 miles. It still gets 21mpg, combined highway/city, as it was claimed in 1998. Other than the heater, and cruise control, not working I have no issues with it. It still runs and shifts good, the acceleration is still like it was. It has no problem passing slow drivers in front of me on the highway, and if I'm on a long stretch of highway, it will get up to 120mph(haven't had the nerve, yet, to go faster) with no problem.
1998 was probably the last best year of Nissan before it joined forces with Renault. IMHO, you have a keeper.
I agree😁
Back then the Maximas were good cars. It's too bad the newer ones don't last anywhere near as long.
I don't think I could have gotten a better car, for the price I paid, either.
I have a 2000 with almost 270000 on it. Original engine and transmission, I think you have the same powertrain. Keep taking good care of it and it should last a lot longer. Running 120 is something I would not do on a car with that many miles. I do run 80-85 now and then...
I typically drive around 80-85 on the highway. I drove it at 120 once, just to see if the car actually could. I was going the speed limit, then gradually increased to 120. Only had it at that speed for a couple minutes.
Ahh my father had a 1994 Maxima I loved that thing. Maximas were pretty good until around 2001 then they started having problems.
Those things really fly
Yeah, she will haul ass, if I ask her to. Yes, I call my car a "she". Even named her Shadow.
