How to make 20-year-old Sienna reliable for cross-country driving?

What should I change on a 20 year old Toyota Sienna minivan to make it reliable enough for multiple cross county trips?

Greetings Scotty,

My 2004 AWD Toyota Sienna has 180K miles and was recently converted into a campervan. I’d like to keep it for at least another 10 years and use it to visit all of America’s National Parks. In addition to a timing belt, what else should I consider replacing to ensure it is reliable enough to make multiple trips from New York to California?

If you plan to drive a 20-year-old vehicle cross-country for the next 10 years the best thing you can do is make sure you have AAA (or equivalent) with the best towing package they have available.

Other than that perform all normal maintenance and check all major systems before leaving on a trip.

In addition to the advice given by @chucktobias I would recommend replacing the radiator, the radiator hoses and the thermostat (if they are the original ones) when you replace the timing belt and water pump (which would also include servicing the coolant.)

Also recommend replacing the serpentine/accessories belt(s).
