I currently have a 2012 Nissan altima starting to have problems and it wouldn't be worth it to fix the car. I have been looking at older toyotas is the standard transmission as reliable as the automatic. Also I should stay away from Toyotas made in 2007 right?
I agree with the 2003-2008 Corolla being the best generation in terms of reliability. I have a 2004 Corolla which I've owned since 2007. It has NEVER had an engine problem. As long as you change the oil regularly, it pretty much lasts forever. I'm typing this in March 2022. My odometer hit 299,999 in 2013 and has remained stuck there ever since. The car now has well over 500,000 miles on it and I have only had very minor or normal repairs needed with the car. A few years ago, the wheel bearings gave out one by one over a 6-month period, but that was to be expected with the age of the car. And just recently I replaced the bushings on the lower control arms, which had worn out. Somewhere along the way I also replaced the alternator. But as far as engine - nada. The car has been paid off since 2012 so I've enjoyed several years of no payments and extremely minor repair bills for things like oil changes, tires and brake pads. I'm going to keep buying Toyota for the rest of my life.
Yea I’d stay away from 2007-2011 Camrys and RAV4s or any Toyota from those years with the 2.4 liter 4 cylinder since their engines burn oil. But a Toyota 2012 and up should work great. As for the transmissions, manuals are usually more reliable but Toyota also makes excellent automatics. With a manual tho, you still have the clutch to worry about
Our of curiosity, what is wrong with your Altima?
There is a humming/whining noise that I can hear when I accelerate sounds like it is coming from the back of the car but not sure. A rattle coming from up front can hear it while driving when I start the car and when I accelerate sometimes it goes away sometimes it doesn't.
could be a CVT problem, which is common on those to fail.
Old Toyotas are great, but Stay away from the following:
2007-2011 Camry (Oil consumption issues on the 4 cylinder model and interiors were not the best)
2007-2012 Rav4 (again same problems as the Camry)
2008-2013 Corolla (Some had oil consumption problems and they were a downgrade in terms of overall quality from the 2003-2008 corollas which were much better built and IMO the best generation of the corolla)
1998-2002 Corolla (They were rolling piles of junk with intake and exhaust manifold problems some had oil consumption problems, and they were just not the best in terms of quality)
2006 Avalon (some had engine problems where the car would go into limp home mode)
Otherwise, the other ones are excellent.
