Hey everyone, I recently took my car to Autozone to get it scanned, 2007 Lexus LS 460 with 170,000mi, and the guy who was working there said that they only let people use their scan tools if the check engine light is on, which fortunately mine isn't. Is there another place that I could get my car scanned for free?
It is time to invest in a scan tool so you don’t have to encounter this again (plus sake of convenience). See below:

A lot of car parts places will do a "basic" scan for free (you might try a different AutoZone, or go when they aren't busy). But if you're not dealing with a check engine code, you probably want more detailed info on what your engine is doing, which would take a more advanced scanner. Fortunately, Scotty recommends scanners in a variety of price ranges - click Tools in the upper right of the screen.

All auto parts stores will tell you the same thing. I work at an auto zone and our scanner will only read DTCs. Though we do have new ones that can erase codes and also read ABS and airbag codes. Our scanners are still relatively basic. If you want to see I/M readiness, or stream live data, you'll have to find a shop or independent mechanic.
You can even buy a standalone unit yourself for a good price. $50 would get you a decent one, just stay away from the super cheap ones. Innova has a deal with auto zone and they have a decent range of them. I'm thinking about getting the 3100RS for $100 myself. It's just a matter of what you want to do.
what do you want to scan?
