Whining noise while driving

I drive a 1999 Ford Ranger 3L 6cyl automatic with 130K miles. I have a whining noise that I can hear while I am driving between 40-45. The noise goes away when I let off the gas pedal but comes right back with I give it a little gas. It is not extremely loud just irritating to listen to while city driving. Could this be something in the rear end or would it be something in the transmission? Thanks.

Does it still whine when you rev the engine while you’re parked (not moving)?

No, only while I am actually driving and only appears when I start getting close to 40MPH. Below that, or when I start getting close to 50, it goes away or gets quiet enough that I do not notice it to the degree I hear it at 40-45MPH.

Yeah, it might be from your tranny/drivetrain, in that case. Pinpoint the source of the noise using this technique -

It could be anywhere in the drivetrain.

Does it happen in all gears?

Inspect the u-joints and axle input for excess slop.

Check if the axle had enough fluid in it.

If it did, take off the cover and check the the fluid and magnets for excess metal. Check the ring+pinion for excess wear.

Might as well check bearings for play too.

Thanks all. I have some investigating to do. I saw that video of Scotty's before, I never knew I would need it in the future but I guess the future is here. {black}:laughingoutloud:
