Will My Car Rat ME Out?

Hey Scotty,

I dream of buying a 2021 Acura TLX type S. While watching a video on this car I noticed that in the middle of the instrument cluster a tiny screen display has a cup of coffee on a saucer and the words " Driver Attention Level Minimal."

If I were driving this car and wrecked it would the authorities retrieve this information (Like the black box on an airplane) to help suspend my license or reduce my insurance coverage due to "contributory negligence?

Also, if I were doing donuts in a parking lot in the Nashville snow would the coffee and saucer display include the image of a donut?

According to this video, you were drifting in and out of your lane

In theory, yes. A court could subpoena this information. Cars have had black boxes since the 90's. It records things like brake application, steering wheel angle, wheel speed, airbag deployment etc.

In practice, I've never seen it used. Insurance companies don't care. It's very expensive to retrieve this data, and I suspect it's only done in rare cases, like when fatalities are involved, criminal investigations, or when vehicle defects are suspected.

No.

My vehicle won't even let me do donuts. It turns on stability control and shuts off power. (even if I have manually disabled stability/traction control)

Exactly - he must've been serving on the road, knowing how hard it is to trigger the "driver attention low" message.
On the topic of donuts, neither can an Acura do those... considering V6 Acura TLXs have the same ZF 9HP that Fiats use - I don't think it'll be doing donuts, it might manage to do a donut before it'll need a replacement. Owners say it's shift pattern and reliability are miserable...
the newest one's are a new design, with way too many "gears" (it has a single compound planetary, but I mean is just the complexity of such an apparatus) jammed inside of a casing that's only 15 inches with only roughly 4.5 quarts of oil (pls don't quote me on this) doesn't sound like it'll handle 350 pound-feet, As I see it, it'll probably explode only thinking about initiating a donut. but only time will tell...

Yes they can retrieve pre crash data from the car's computer, particularly when fatalities are involved. I'm not really sure about the donut.

Probably.

You can run but you can't hide.

If you are so concerned about being ratted out, stop doing the things that you are concerned about being ratted out for. A.K.A. keep it between the lines.
