Had to remove thermostat cuz car waz

running tagged when in approaching

overheated solved that by removing

thermostat. Used cardboard to block air

and that gave me heat. 1993 Subaru

stickshift. Here’s the problem

Why are the fans coming on in

cold weather when the engine temp

is not approaching warm? What type

of sensor would turn them on? I need

to shut them off cuz I don’t like them

pushing against the cardboard block.

Don’t want to burn out the fans!

Look forward to your answer !

thanks

Apparently your old thermostat was stuck closed causing overheating. I don't understand why you removed rather than replaced the thermostat. The engine will warm up faster and provide heat sooner with a correctly functioning thermostat. They only cost about $25 and should be replaced every so often anyway. So ????

If you want to shut off the fans and keep running without a thermostat you can just disconnect the plug attached to each fan. Keep a close eye on the temp gauge if u do.

The coolant temperature sensor might be faulty.

As a general rule it is not advisable to run without a thermostat especially in winter. The rings won't seat and everything else that has to stabilize at a fixed temperature will be unstable. Your car is almost 30 years old. You run the risk of burning excessive oil and or doing damage. Thermostats are cheap and since you already removed one you know how to install a new one. The fans may be on there own control which could include temperature and time.  Blocking the radiators to get heat is very risky. What happens if your are driving and you don't notice the temperature creeping up. You don't have an protection that you would have with the thermostat installed.

that doesn't burn out fans. That's not how fans work.

You should probably repair your car instead of monkeying with it.

Nobody is removing Zs. That's just the way the rest of the world spells.

But I find your protest amusing 😆

Actually had a mechanic replace the

thermostat but had to suggest to him

how it could be done. In a Subaru you

need part of the thermostat to remain

to seat it when putting back. So you

have to remove the flapper/spring

and then install giving U free flow.

The car waz running “ragged” unsmooth

and shaky under acceleration, and

the temperature gauge waz barely

Halfway up it’s range. No Normally

associated Smell from overheating

waz detected, only poor engine

performance, which wazent observed

at lower temperatures. So minusing

the thermostat fixed that problem 100%,

during the summer. The Winter haz

been the problem and the temp gauge

clearly showz that, being slightly below

the line. One fan haz itz own fuze which

i will remove for the winter. Now from

your advice I shall rig up an on and

off switch for the second fan so when

spring arrives I can move to have 1

fan working when needed.

Now for the why I wanted to remove

the tStat. When visiting CT from NV,

i believe someone did something to

my car. I had the tStat removed so

i could get home. Just before that the AC

belt snapped cuz the AC pump froze.

Went from 18 mpg to 32 mpg. So

don’t want AC. I gave a lot of thought

about what could have been causing

the car to run ragged when getting

warmed but nowhere near hot ?

The only thing I could think of waz

shredded paper inside the coolant

system but that sounds a little

wacky ?
