Won't stay running/ won't restart

Hey anyone willing to answer, I have a 1979 Ford Granada, which, granted, isn't necessarily a great car. However, it has a straight six engine which supposedly weren't that bad of an engine. My problem: the car will happily start, and stay running for maybe 10 minutes, die, and will not restart until the next day. I've replaced spark plugs, fuel pump setup, cleaned the fuel tank, and put a new distributor and spark plug cables on. Probably a simple problem, but I'd love to hear any ideas on what the issue might be.

Yeah coil, but first take a spark plug out and ground it have a friend hit starter see if there is spark at the plug. You are correct they were good cars, the six was great motor. I sold them new in 1975 when I ran a ford dealership. Took a loaded this off the hauler v8 took it to 120 mph. My demo. Sold it and the owner traded it with 180k never had a issue.

Also replaced that, and that is definitely something to try with the spark plug

Problem with failed coils is often they quit working when coil gets hot - internal short develops as temperature of the coil rises. Starts working again when it cools.

OK, … one more idea: … is your Grenada’s spark controlled by points, … or is it electronic box triggered? I’m asking because I owned at one point a new ‘79 BMW 320i which had originally points - which didn’t last more than 5k miles. So, I changed out the points to that olden Altronic optical points kit, and shortly after, the car always started, run well for a 10-20 minutes,… than kept quitting. After about 15 minutes it always started again, … but quit after a while. I got frustrated and so I pulled electronic ignition kit out and reinstalled points. And guess what?

It was an electronic box that was defective. I exchanged it for a new one, … reinstalled it, and the car kept running perfectly after that, all the way till 2004, when I finally sold it.

And so, if your Grenada does have an electronic control box managing ignition, it’s probably a good idea to look for trouble there. Just a thought, …
Best,

FS.
