If Nissan and Renault didn’t merge, would Nissan have prevailed to this day? Doesn’t Nissan have a history of financial issues and almost going bankrupt?
Nissan was pretty well bankrupt before they were rescued by Renault, so if it wasn't for Renault Nissan probably would have been gone by now. If it wasn't for Renault there is a good chance that Mitsubishi would also have been gone by now.
If Nissan, at the time, aligned with another Japanese brand like Toyota or Honda, then Nissan probably wouldn’t be what it is today.
@mattjyim 100%
What drove them to bankruptcy before Renault?
Boring cars, mediocre performance and weird quality issues.
It’s how in 2019 Renault bought out Mitsubishi. And I’m sure that in 5 years Mitsubishi current lack of quality will be blamed on Renault.
Nope. Renault is what keeps Nissan alive.
Nissan is able to leach of Renault (R-N-M ALLIANCE), get modern somewhat reliable engines, get access to good Diesel engines for Europe and the sheer power of Renault’s dealer network.
The thing that makes Nissan terrible is the CVTs that they design by them selfs under their Jatco division.
Nissan would not be better off without Renault, as Renault are their only hopes of survival especially when we are talking about car electrification.
Renault was amoung the first to produce electric cars, starting with the Fluence ZE, and the ZOE. The Nissan Leaf is just a Renault Zoe with active battery cooling / heating.
Similar to this, the Nissan Juke, under its skin is just a Renault Captur, the Nissan Micra is actually a Renault Clio, and many more examples…
And when Nissan tries to develop something that’s not Renault based we end with total garbage like the new Altima and Nissan Note.
Here in the States, Nissan quality went down under their alliance with Renault. Depending on where one is in the world (i.e. different markets across the globe), one’s experiences with different brands (and therefore their conclusion/opinion about them) varies, which is why I don’t comment on vehicles in other markets.
Well maybe you do not know what’s going in other markets but most cars I had were US spec. 🙂
It takes about 5 years to design to car. Nissan started making their terrible cars way before Renault got involved.
.
The fact that it was around the same time as Renault saving them from bankruptcy doesn’t mean it’s because of them.
.
Causation ≠ Correlation.
.
Everything that’s bad about Nissan is the fault of their engineers and that’s the reason that in 2017 Renault decided that from now on, Nissan will be fully based on Renault products and won’t have their own engine and transmission teams
Well I glad I can see the full picture cause I had US Spec Nissan models such as the Juke and comparing to renualt I can tell you it’s an absolute joke..
the only issue is that Renault doesn't really build big engines but knowing Renault’s track record I’m sure they’ll come up with good ones sooner rather then later.
I would say it might have had a better situation than the current one.
As far as I can tell, Nissan went down the tubes when they switched over to troublesome CVT"S
Seems to be a pattern with Renault. Older members here might remember that they both saved and destroyed an American car company about 40 years or so ago.
Another question here: would Nissan still make junk without Renault and those Jatco CVTs?
They already make vehicles without CVTs (and have been the entire time) and they are perfectly fine. {black}:suspicious:
