do u think it’s a smart choice

How well do you know (trust) this buddy?

I would pass. Replacing the ecm on that thing can cost a fortune. This 'buddy' of yours is making you run into a nightmare.

Volvo s40 is a good car, especially with the 5 cylinder engine. However, changing the ECM and catalytic converter costs a fortune and on top of that, he is selling it to you for $1000. I would pass and look for another s40.

when they begin to fall apart they do not stop.

also the ECU replacement ain’t all that easy, AND most of the time ECU like symptoms end up being the CEM - and that’s even more of a crapshoot to fix.

I know this is an old thread, but I have a 2009 s40 I bought for $13K in 2014.  It has 66K on it when I bought it.  I did have a problem with the ECM that was not covered under warranty and had to replace it.  Cost me $1800.  Since that time, I have put over 70K on the car (it now has 136K), and have not had a major problem beyond wear and tear.  I may hold on to it for 2-3 more years, or keep it as a second car after I buy a truck or SUV.  I am all around happy with the car.
