| If your mechanic is using OEM parts, that seems like a fair price for a Jaguar. On a 21yr old vehicle, I would personally change both wheel bearings because the other/s won’t be far away.. If this is your daily driver, consider using good quality/OEM wheel bearing assemblies to avoid having to repeat the repair a few months later. All the best! | |||||

| Scotty, I have 2006 Pontiac Torrent 3.4L V-6 with ABS, with 134,000 miles on it. I noticed a grinding noise when stopping a few months ago. My shop told me it was a bad wheel bearing and speed sensor. There where no codes. Well now it’s had 3 different wheel bearings installed. Each one failed and the noise came back within a few weeks. Any idea what could cause these all to go bad? The shop used Moog and AC Delco parts. | |||||

| It's very likely a rear wheel bearing. (Hopefully it's that and not your differential!) I'm not familiar with that car but it has a solid rear axle and on most of those to replace wheel bearings it is not necessary to do anything other than remove the axle shafts, the transmission does not have to be touched. From what I can tell with a quick online search your axle shafts are held in by C-clips inside the differential. It should not be a difficult job for any good mechanic or even an experienced amateur. Ebay is not a good source for critical parts. Many there are cheap Chinese counterfeits. Best would be an OEM bearing set or one of the leading brands such as SKF or Timkin. | |||||

| Hello Scotty, I bought a two-owner 2006 Tundra 4.0V6 (base-model) with 255,000 miles last October (2020) for $3200.00. Prior to buying, I found out, from viewing public vehicle service reports, that both owners had seemed to exclusively gone to dealerships for oil changes. I base that on the mileage recorded at each oil change and also noticed a lot of things had been done to the truck that were only identified by the word "serviced". I also found that the U-joint located at the differential was replaced by a private shop, which I verified by visual inspection. So naturally, I have no idea of what specific maintenance has been done to this truck. I have heard you talk about timing chains and transmission oil changes on older vehicles, but I thought I'd ask you about how they might relate to this particular situation. All fluids looks normal and the tranny seems to preform normally. At this point, should I drain and refill with new fluid? Moving on; I get a low pitched droning noise which sounds to be coming from the front right area of the truck. It only happens at speeds between around 56 and 72mph and then goes away. Lifting the truck up off the ground and checking the wheel bearing for play, dragging or grinding noises shows that the bearing looks and sounds to be functioning normally. I'm hesitant to just replace the bearing because it is the pressed-in type so I can't do it as a DIY project. I don't want a repair shop to do it until I have your opinion about it. My last question has to do with the recent periodic vibration in the steering wheel that goes away shortly after it starts happening. It may be going away when I temporally stop accelerating. The issue is sporadic and I can't totally say that, in every instance, the front end stops shaking because of that. One side not, prior to this problem, I had just put in 5 gallons of 6 month old "just in case" gasoline in the tank. The steering wheel and front end are what's shaking the engine seem to be running normally. I'm around your age and I can't fully express how I miss the days of manual timing adjustments and being able to see the ground in the engine compartment. Can you please address these issues for me? | Hi Scotty Enjoy watching your youtube channel very much.Thanks for all the good advice. I have 96 Toyota 4runner SR5 4WD with 220k miles and a 5 sp manual transmission. I am also the original owner. At 175k miles, I had the original clutch replaced because it was worn out and the throwout bearing was chirping when the clutch pedal was released. Within 2 months of replacing the clutch, the new throwout bearing was chirping again. I took it back to the shop and they replaced it with an Asin OEM bearing. Well, after a couple more months, it was chirping again. Still chirping away at 220k miles. Very annoying! Any ideas? Another shop wanted to replace the clutch again with factory parts. | Hello, My 2007 Toyota 4Runner (SR5 V8, full-time AWD, 147,000 miles) developed a burning smell and oil leak coming from the driver's side back wheel starting around February. Took the car to the dealership mid-April. They diagnosed the problem as "rear brake caliper leaking" and so I got the caliper and brake pads replaced as recommended. When I got the car back, the problem persisted. This time, I found a pool of oil (looked like pancake syrup) at the inside of the wheel so I took the car back the second time early May. Their second diagnosis was "leakage in the rear axle seal" so I replaced the axle seal as they recommended. After getting the car back the second time, I took it to a manual car wash and thoroughly cleaned the area to avoid any misdiagnosis. I can still notice a whiff of burning oil when getting in/out of the car after driving around town. Entire caliper is still damp with oil. When I reach in between the spokes and feel both the caliper and lower part of the brake rotor, I get grease on my hands as if I'd just eaten fried chicken without wiping my hands off. Other three wheels are rusty, but perfectly clean and dry. Here are my questions: At this point I am starting to question the initial diagnosis. If I was a DIY car enthusiast and wanted to take this as a learning opportunity, I would've started out small by replacing the caliper seal and go from there. Can a leaking brake fluid cause a burning smell? During the first repair session, I did have the front two calipers replaced because they were seizing up and caused steering wheel vibration (problem now fixed). Somehow coincidentally it was also a caliper problem for the back wheel? There's now an unmistakable oil stain on the garage floor at the spot where that wheel goes when parked. I actually don't know what the texture/consistency of brake fluid is supposed to be; all I know is that I'm getting greasy, yellow oil on my hands. What else could possibly be causing the burning oil smell? I've been told the axle bearing is fine, and nothing has been dripping from the center middle of the car. Car is 15 years old... not surprised that it's leaking oil. However, can a problem like this be fixed completely, or can it turn into something chronic that I'll have to deal with? I understand the car can't be good as new but at least expected the issue to be solved, especially after spending almost 25% of the car's value on repairs this past month. | Hi all, the noise which I thought was solved is back. My 2010 RDX SH-AWD is making a horrendous squealing noise from the front right corner of the car only while moving. It is intermittent, but I've noticed it a lot more when the roads are dirty from salt/snow. Recent work done since Oct 2021; Front right wheel bearing replaced Both front CV shafts replaced (leaking) Brakes serviced by two shops (Honda dealer & independent), rear pads and rotors replaced at dealer. New tires all around I've attached some videos I took of it today, the frequency of this sound is relative to the speed of the wheel turning, whether Im accelerating, braking or coasting, it stops when I stop. I was thinking (and hoping) it is maybe some dirt/debris rubbing between the pads and rotors on that one wheel, but it's driving me insane and I want to get to the bottom of this. I'm just looking for any opinions on where to go next with this, any help would be appreciated | |||||

| Scotty, I have a 2012 Chevy Equinox with 20k miles on it, its a 2WD. When I drive it on the interstate for an hour or so, after I exit and slow to a stop, just at 1mph or less I get this rubbing like noise in the rear passenger wheel. I've checked it with an IR scope and that hub reads about 120F, and the driver side reads 100F. I've replaced the brake caliber assembly and that didn't fix it. Around town it is fine, it only has this issue when driving higher speeds for extended times. If you jack the car up afterwards and rotate the tire it will make that wiring noise just as the wheel slows to a stop. If you spin the wheel at a few MPH you don't hear anything....it only make that noise when the wheel makes the last rotation to a stop. wheel hub bearing?????? Is there a way to check that before I dig in a replace it, or is there an alternate item I should investigate, I checked and backed off the E-brake all the way and that didn't seem to make a difference either.......thank you sir.....Eric. | |||||

| Hello, 2013 Toyota Prius. I hit a huge pothole on the highway passenger side, started hearing a whirring wheel bearing sound immediately afterwards. Bad when turning left, almost gone when turning right. I assumed it was my passenger side front. However there is no play in any of the 4 wheels, no unusual sounds from any of the 4 wheels while spinning them, only hear sounds from 45-65mph, not above or below that. It SOUNDED like it was coming from the front of the vehicle however I couldn't confirm which side. Then the weirdest thing happens this morning. Days after the incident/noise began, I get a code and several warning lights for Rear Speed sensor LH circuit. I'm assuming that's my rear drivers side hub. This is the exact opposite of where I impacted the pothole (passenger side). I jacked up the car and my rear driver's side wheel has no play, and all I can hear is brake rotor when I turn it. This is very strange to me and I don't want to replace parts for no reason, these hub assemblies are $400 from toyota each. What should I do? | |||||

| I replaced the tires and wheel bearings on 2009 Toyota Camry 2.4 liter and the humming sound still there. What else could it be? I bought the the knuckle assembly including wheel bearing average brand, could it be that the part is defective? | |||||

| I own a 2009 Toyota Camry 2.4L 135K miles automatic. After having the wheel Hub bearing Knuckle Assembly and front struts replaced the car is making a screeching sound when turning my steering wheel to the left ? Had the mechanic double check and it's not the shield but after this repair the noise began. The mechanic cannot figure out the problem, what else can it be? | |||||

| Clarification required: Is this the 3rd failed on one front? Or have you had multiple failers on different sides? This is too soon to be replaced so unless you be mountain climbing over every pothole on purpose. Improper installation or cheap wheel bearings. Please see if you have a brand that the mechanic quotes you on as they are suppose to last at least 85k miles. It should be replaced under warranty, or free of charge. Has the mechanic charged you multiple times?/ How are you sure it is a wheel bearing and not another part failers? | |||||

| Replaced the steering angle sensor today. It did not fix the abs and Trac lights. Codes won't clear. I think the drivers rear new wheel bearing from Koyo is defective. Its a sealed bearing but leaking grease on the sensor. The other side is not leaking. I bet the machine shop damaged it pressing it on. The abs sensor mounts in the bearing flange. The tone ring it reads in the bearing could be damaged. | |||||
