| Scotty, have you ever considered doing a video on the history of the Lexus GX? there's quite a following for these SUV's, a lot of people, specifically people who haven't owned one, think its just a rebadged toyota 4 runner, but us owners feel differently. Seems to be in its own class, and as of right now, the news models are quite popular, as dealers can't seem to keep them on their lots- so the word must be out if this vehicle interests you, because its sort of in its own class and all, it checks the boxes for what people want. | What year is it? They will outlast both vehicles if maintained. However, those GXs are thirsty vehicles and maintenance will cost a premium. If you’re okay with those, it can be a solid vehicle. Please make sure a trusty mechanic checks it out before purchase. | |||||

| On listening to your audio clip again, was it filmed from inside the cabin or under the hood? If it wasn’t from under the hood, can you please film it again (when it shows up next), this time from under the hood? | |||||

| Hello. The emission sticker under the hood stated that it’s in fact a 1UR-FE engine which does not have GDI, only VVT. | |||||

| @angli see answer from @figmund-sreud in this thread. Direct injection engines normally produce a ticking sound. So unless you have any other adverse symptoms, I’ll say it’s normal. | |||||

| You’re right, digging around online reveals the ticking is characteristic of direct injection engines. | |||||

| The sound only persist for 1-2 minutes or so, only on cold start ups. And only appear on idle. If I “rev up my engine” the noise will disappear no matter it’s cold or not. I think it has two possibilities, the noise maybe disappear or other noise from the engine just simply covered it up when I rev it up. | |||||

| Try to isolate the sound using this method, if you feel it’s not the engine - Does the sound disappear after the engine has warmed up? Does it only appear at idle when the engine is cold? | |||||

| It knocks every time when there is a cold start. But today is worse, almost sounds like someone’s knocking on the wood door and is louder than usual. Problem is under the hood there are only the normal engine sound, this sound only can be heard inside of the cabin, but I am sure it’s from engine compartment. If it’s not engine maybe is something else that is under the hood. | |||||

| Ah, I see. Well to be honest with you, I can barely hear the sound from your engine. I just hear your breathing. I turned my headset to the highest it could go, and I think I just barely heard what you're talking about. How are you recording the sound? From inside the car is no good. You need to open the hood and put your phone close to the engine noise. As for the dealer problem, maybe arrive at the dealer an hour or two before they open. Try to replicate the sound when you're about to be serviced. Another question, exactly how often does the sound happen? Record the times in a notebook if need be! | |||||
