Engine pounding noise from Lexus GX460

Hello:
I have a 2021 GX460 Luxury with 2100 miles. When I start the car today (cold start 36 degree) I notice there is a knock inside of the car.

The car has 4.6L Toyota 1UR-FE engine.

Is it normal? I attached the noise, sorry for the noise of my stuffed nose. There is a clear knock, ticking, pounding noise. Please adjust your device to higher volume in order to listen.
Thanks

Did you ever get this figured out and fixed? I have the exact same sound under the same circumstances on a 2019 GX with 26k miles. Started around the 22k mark. Dealer said cannot reproduce. Of course, when I took it in that day, it wasn't happening.

Try to isolate the sound using this method, if you feel it’s not the engine -

Does the sound disappear after the engine has warmed up? Does it only appear at idle when the engine is cold?

The sound only persist for 1-2 minutes or so, only on cold start ups. And only appear on idle. If I “rev up my engine” the noise will disappear no matter it’s cold or not. I think it has two possibilities, the noise maybe disappear or other noise from the engine just simply covered it up when I rev it up.

@angli see answer from @figmund-sreud in this thread. Direct injection engines normally produce a ticking sound. So unless you have any other adverse symptoms, I’ll say it’s normal.

Hello. The emission sticker under the hood stated that it’s in fact a 1UR-FE engine which does not have GDI, only VVT.

On listening to your audio clip again, was it filmed from inside the cabin or under the hood? If it wasn’t from under the hood, can you please film it again (when it shows up next), this time from under the hood?

You can also use the following tool to better pinpoint where coming from:

OK, I chime in: I’m not versed on latest gizmos installed on GX460, but this may just provide you the answer: Wait until your car is cold, … open the hood, stand in front of it, take off that “beauty cover” if it has one, place your hand on top of a direct injection fuel pump, and have a buddy start the car. If the noise is coming from that high pressure fuel injection pump, … it’s normal! fwiw.

Btw, I’m assuming that your car is actually equipped with 1UR-FSE engine, … the latest fuel injection system, … being ‘21 model.

You’re right, digging around online reveals the ticking is characteristic of direct injection engines.

You already made a previous topic & you were advised to take it to the dealer. You have a brand new car. This is a warranty issue & will not cost you any money. So have you taken the car to the dealer, and if not, why haven't you?

Yes. I did, they said they could not replicate the problem. Today I caught the sound so I figured to upload to this community to see what’s the problem is if any before I go back to dealer again, obviously the dealer just pushing and don’t want to solve the problem.

Ah, I see. Well to be honest with you, I can barely hear the sound from your engine. I just hear your breathing. I turned my headset to the highest it could go, and I think I just barely heard what you're talking about. How are you recording the sound? From inside the car is no good. You need to open the hood and put your phone close to the engine noise. As for the dealer problem, maybe arrive at the dealer an hour or two before they open. Try to replicate the sound when you're about to be serviced. Another question, exactly how often does the sound happen? Record the times in a notebook if need be!

It knocks every time when there is a cold start. But today is worse, almost sounds like someone’s knocking on the wood door and is louder than usual. Problem is under the hood there are only the normal engine sound, this sound only can be heard inside of the cabin, but I am sure it’s from engine compartment. If it’s not engine maybe is something else that is under the hood.
