| Should I resurface rotors | 48Relevance | 3 years ago | Gearspro343 | Submit Your Question HERE | |
| 2021 Ram 4500 45,000 miles Hello to you all! so i was quoted $1577.44 at the dealer to replace the rear brake pads and to resurface the rotors (the pads are reported to be 4mm thick) . so I was looking to do them myself. but It seems like semi metallic brake pads are the only option for this heavy duty truck which makes sense. but do i actually need to resurface or replace the rotors too? cause I know these type of pads do wear rotors faster, but i don't know how fast. I'm relatively new to maintaining big trucks since I'm helping the family business, and ... | |||||

| If the steering wheel doesn't move when you brake, and the rotor thickness is within spec, there's no real reason to resurface rotors. Turning or resurfacing old is more expensive than buying new. You probably worked on old vehicles like my '79 Catalina, where the hub and rotor are all one big piece. They made sense to resurface back then. The rotors were integral to the car and needed wheel bearings greased or replaced if you replaced the rotors. Nowadays, the only thing holding those on are the lugnuts, the brake caliper bracket and wheel. They're separate ... | |||||

| New rotors for most cars are inexpensive enough that it doesn't make economic sense to resurface the old ones. Also the rotors on a lot of today's cars are pretty thin and don't really have enough "meat" on them to resurface, which of course involves grinding away a layer of metal. | |||||

| Local Toyota shop wants around $850 to replace four brake pads and resurface the rotors. A local independent shop wants $300-$340 to replace four rotors. They say the no longer resurface rotors, that few shops do, because of the labor price involved—that it is cheaper in the long run to simply buy new pads more often. What do you think? | |||||

| If there's no play in any other components including the wheel bearing, then yes. 100% warped rotor. Some places will still resurface them if you don't want to go buy new ones but that's a dying field. If you do resurface the rotors, be sure to also resurface the pads. Otherwise just replace both. | |||||

| I never resurface flywheels because they're thin enough and you start grinding stuff off they get thinner and then the clutch is wear out even faster normally on a small Honda you can just reuse the old one or if you're worried buy an aftermarket one they don't cost that much | |||||

| That's a loss leader where the dealer wants to get your car into the shop to upsell you a litany of expensive and unnecessary "services". Your best bet would be to avoid dealers for non-warranty work and find a good local mechanic. | |||||

| Hi Scotty. I live in the Tampa Florida area. Recently I have been getting ads from local dealerships offering new brake pads and disc “resurfacing” for $99. The fine print says “per axle”. What are your thoughts on resurfacing rotors vs replacement? | |||||

| If you have had a good experience, consider yourself blessed. You are one of the few. Time changes things, new people, new techniques, etc. If you feel comfortable with dealing with these people, more power to you. But please be careful not to get taken advantage of. If there is no wobble or other problem with the rotors and the dealer wants to replace them - there's the windup and there's the pitch. Just say "No, Thank You." | |||||

| Doesn't matter how great you think the dealership is, they are lying. Just replace your pads and call it good. Please find an independent mechanic that won't try to continually rip you off for unnecessary work. | |||||

| Last shop I saw that did resurfacing charged $3 if you brought them in....that was 20 years ago. For $17 more you can buy a rotor. If you really want to save a ton buy some duralast "lifetime warranty" rotors/pads & replace them yourself. It'll cost maybe 1/4 of the cheaper quote, if that. There's TONS of model specific videos on YouTube & it's any easy job for just about anyone unless you're crippled with arthritis or missing a hand. You can also rent the tools at AutoZone. | |||||

| It's a Lexus RX350. No idea what new rotors will run. My question is very general, however. I'm just trying to get a consensus as to the general practice these days. | |||||
