oil change intervals

I've been driving for 50 + years, everything from M 48 tanks and APC's to VW beetles and most everything in between. I have allways changed the oil and filters [ not in the tanks!] between 2500 and 3000 miles and had no oil related issues. Am i wasting my money? Some of the newer cars recommend oil changes of up to 5000 to 7000 miles. Is this nuts or am I ?

No, I also change my oil ever 3k miles cause oil is way cheaper then engines 🙂

I do that and never have engine problems.

On the other hand I’ve seen a lot of engines with serious oil burning issues that probably would’ve lasted more if they’d been maintained better.

change the oil in your tranny regularly too, I’ve seen people forgetting to do that at all and automatics just flat out wear out beyond repair.

I think Scotty also said you should change your oil more regularly then recommended by the manufacturer.

5k mile intervals when using full synthetic or once a year is the new normal. 3k miles used to be necessary, but oils have gotten much better and have a longer life span.

Some  modern vehicle manufacturers OCIs are 10k mark. My grandparents Lexus manual says every 10k. These full synthetic oils that are out now a days are insanely good and efficient. My vehicle is a 2012 Jeep and although it uses full synthetic manual states every 5k change oil and filter. Always, always, always follow the manual that’s in that glove compartment.

"The longest I’ve went between oil changes is 55,000 miles.  I usually waited for the oil to turn black before changing it."

Most engines aren't built like that. Change it every 5k.

Amsoil signature series 25,000 miles.

All I have to say on this subject: … If you own a vehicle with Toyota engines - A25·M20 - Dynamic Force series (R4), change the oil more often than what's recommended. In my end of the woods, a recommendation is every 16,000 kilometres. I find that oil is out of grade at bit over 8,000 kilometres!

(I’m just talking about the new, fancy schmancy, 0W-16 stuff, btw.)

I'm with you Mittegag.  I don't care what all these newly created oils are or what's in them.  Lubrication is the lifeblood of your engine (as you well know) and I change my oil and filter and pcv valve every 3000 at the most whether it needs it or not.  Like the man above says, oil is cheaper than a new engine.

is it though?
Do you know how much you will spend on oil over the life of the vehicle, and how many extra miles it got you?

No and I don't care either.

I don't think anybody who uses that phrase really does

My vehicle doesn’t require the pcv valve to be changed until 100,000 miles and it isn’t cheap, either. I did it around 105,000 miles and the old one didn’t look bad. You might want to research your engines pcv valve change interval and ask mechanics about what they think for your engine.
