Rough 1-2 upshift

I have a 06 Corolla with rough shifting going from 1 to 2 after a long overdue fluid change of 100,000 miles. Before the fluid change, it occasionally had a torque converter shudder above 45mph and would throw the p0741 code, but the shifting from 1 to 2 was fine. After the fluid change, the torque converter shudder resolved and it no longer threw the code but the shift from 1 to 2 got rough. After a few test runs I tested if 2nd gear was slipping and it didn't feel like it was slipping. I put the gear selector on 2(locking out gears 3 and 4) and the upshift to 1 to 2 is buttery smooth. Upshifts from 2, 3, and 4 with the selector on D also feel normal. the downshift from 3 to 2, is as soft as before the fluid change. I also checked many times if the trans was overheating after the change.

The fluid I used was Valvoline max-life multi-vehicle ATF.

Can it be a sticking valve, a bad TCC solenoid, the wrong fluid, or a faulty TCM?

What can be done besides needing a rebuild or new transmission?

Thanks for reading.

if the adaptive reset wont do it, what else could it be?

The wrong fluid. (OEM is best.) A worn out transmission. Probably quite a few other things. (Automatic transmissions are complex beasts.)

If the simple stuff doesn't help you need to have it checked out by a transmission expert who can use a professional-grade scan tool to analyze the data stream for issues.

It sounds like resetting adaptive shift so the car's computer can relearn how to shift smoothly might help. This is easily done with a scan tool that has this function.

I couldn't find any information on how to reset adaptive shift on a Toyota without a scan tool. You can try disconnecting the negative battery terminal overnight but that might not be enough to reset adaptive shift.

It's also possible that adaptive shift will relearn on it's own after driving the car around for a while. I don't recommend doing that if the transmission is shifting hard though because hard shifts will damage the transmission quickly.

@oskool Yeah i tried disconnecting the battery and no luck, I already drove more than 500 miles after the fluid change and no luck. i hope the adaptive reset will do the trick. one last question. if the adaptive reset wont do it, what else could it be? (trying my absolute best to keep this beater car going, still looks nicely kept interior and extrior)

Always use Toyota fluid
