Hello scotty, I have a friend who has a 2007 bmw 750i and it won't shift into any gears at all it stays in park. This BMW has the shifter near the wipers like a pick up trucks usually do. Doesn't matter what we do if we move it up or down it will stay in park i believe it won't even shift into neutral either, any idea how to fix it? The sunroof did leak and the dash did get a little wet. He did take it to the dealership and they said it would cost $10,000 to fix
Check all your fuses and circuit breakers.
Older cars used a mechanical connection to shift the car. BMW was one of the first to use electronic shifting (and now electronic shifting has come to many modern cars.)
If the dash got wet, there is probably a problem somewhere in the electronic system which signals the transmission to shift from the lever (or more accurately, it could be from the shift lever, to a computer module, to the transmission. I really don’t know the exact flow, just for illustrative purposes.)
While I don’t have an exact solution, perhaps this will lead you towards the right direction on how to think about the problem.
Check out this video from 10:22 to 12:15. It was for a turn signal, but heck, since the shifter is on the steering wheel, maybe this will work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJHZx715dQ8
