'08 Expedition, RWD, 108,000 miles - hard starting, otherwise runs very well!

Hello! Long-time watcher, first time caller from Florida -

I've had this car since 2012, bought it at a Ford dealer, end of lease trade-in, 28,000 miles.

This has been a great truck, I've never had any mechanical or electrical issues. Doesn't leak or burn oil or any other fluid except gas - lots of it, relatively speaking (but it was bought for a purpose, towing and hauling 2 adults and 2 kids, 2 dogs and all our "stuff". Other than maintenance, tires and batteries and brakes, it hasn't cost me 1¢ to own. I live on the central east coast of Florida, and the following problem does not seem to be temperature or weather-related.

When I get in to start the car, the starter engages and the engine cranks but does not start. This started off as an intermittent problem, but now it happens each time I try to start the car.

I've found that if I cycle the ignition switch to the "on" position three times quickly (long enough to hear the fuel pump cycle) it starts immediately without hesitation. It never hesitates to accelerate or fails to maintain speed, it happens only on start-up. I borrowed a friend's fuel pressure test kit and noticed that after turning the ignition to the "on" position, the fuel pressure actually reads on the high side, then rather quickly loses pressure. I "googled" for more information, which lead me to believe it was the Fuel Pump Driver Module. (It doesn't have any issues once the engine is running, so I *thought* that might remove the fuel pump and/or fuel filter from the list of possible causes.)

I ordered the part, but I can't find the location of the module to replace it. Some sources indicated it was on the side of the rear frame rail near the gas tank, others indicated that due to rust and corrosion problems, it was relocated under the hood, supposedly near fuel rail on the firewall.

Sorry for the long lead-in, but do you think it could be the fuel pump or fuel filter, the FPDM, or something else entirely? My OBD II scanner does not show any codes, no check engine or any other trouble indicators, either.

Thank you for the great YouTube videos - I'm a subscriber and watch a lot of your videos even when I don't have car troubles! Your frank answers and informed and honest opinions are always appreciated!

Get your VIN number and call a Ford dealer the parts department can look it up and tell you for sure where they locate those modules and for my experience a lot of times it's actually the pump itself going out the pump has a regulator pressure inside and they often go bad and you have to replace the whole assembly

Thank you very much for answering my question! I'll call the dealer to find the part's location. I'll follow up and let you know the eventual fix. I was really hoping to avoid dropping the tank to replace the fuel pump - but I'm guessing you're right. Thanks again!

I hope you like TN, my older brother lived in Murfreesboro. TN really is a great state. I hope you enjoy your new home and the outgoing and friendly people you'll run into wherever you go.
