Hi, I have a 1998 Honda Civic 5-speed and it was not very well maintained by the previous owner. I have already changed the engine oil and coolant but I am hesitant to change the transmission fluid. I have heard from Scotty that it is a bad idea to change an automatic transmission's fluid if it hasn't been maintained well but I need to know if the same goes for a manual transmission since it functions differently.
Just change it, … the car is new to you. New fluid in the manual won’t hurt its newness. It’s a simple process: … just drain it, replace it with Honda Manual Transmission Fluid, or equivalent. It’s just a gear oil of appropriate spec. It takes about 1.5 litre. Fill up to the bottom of the fill plug. That’s it, …

… btw, make sure you remove the drain plug, first! If you drain it first, … and a stubborn fill plug won’t come out, … you will end up in trouble.
