Should I change my transmission fluid.

Hey scotty, I found you a few months ago and I'm soaking up your wealth of knowledge. I have a 2010 Toyota Matrix that I bought 5 years ago with 163000 KM on it. I changed the transmission fluid and filter that year and I've only put on maybe 5,000 km per year. Should I change the fluid and filter again?

Thanks

manual or automatic?

Assuming we’re talking about an auto:

You can check your fluid quality with the dipstick and judge for your self.

the dipstick is near the intake manifold on the right side of the engine, usually it’s a black handle.

The entire “should I change my transmission fluid” topic is about sealed transmissions or those without a way to judge the quality of the fluid after an overly long service interval, not when you can just look at it.

If it’s dirty or has water in it - sure.

If it’s clean, as it probably is, there’s no reason to do that yet.
