12 months or 5k miles oil change

Since the pandemic hit nobody in our house is commuting anymore. Our cars (5 of them) are not going 5k miles in a year.  The oil life monitor on our 2012 Mustang V6 tripped one year to the day since I changed the oil saying it had only 5% oil life left. I didn't know that these cars actually track time like that.  I have only 1k miles on this oil which is full synthetic.  I always change my own oil at 5k and so I just reset it and will wait another 6 months or so.  The other 4 cars will be in the same situation.  What are your thoughts about going over the 12 month rule on changing motor oil?  ( I would always change it if I was going to take a long road trip BTW..)

My theory is oil is cheap compared to an engine.

1 year is normally the maximum time you should have the oil in the car as the detergent break down.

I totally agree with Klob.

The moisture in air can diffuse into oil and since you are not driving that much on the high way, water in engine oil can not evaporate and results in destroying your oil quality.

Hello,

In my opinion all cars should be serviced a minimum of twice a year for safety reasons, Winter service and Summer service.
