1951 Pontiac Chieftain as a daily driver?

Hi Scotty, love your content,

I made the mistake of buying a V12 Jaguar XJ-S as a daily driver, and while that lawn decoration's on the back burner there's an old Pontiac Chieftain for sale up in Nevada, straight 8 engine and in pretty good condition for being almost 70 years old, spent its whole life in a small desert town there, so dry rot and sirface rust is the only real concern as far as the body goes. What do you think about using a '51 Chieftain as a daily driver? I know those old straight 8s and 6s were bullet proof for their day, and the hydramatic transmissions werent too bad neither.

Take care, Dogman

I think it might be OK depending on how much and what kind of driving you do. (Remember, in 1951 there were no high-speed interstate highways.) The automatic transmission in particular would be a concern. The Hydramatic was a pretty good transmission for its time but I'd think after 70 years it would need a complete overhaul. You'd also want a backup vehicle.

No.  But would look good beside the Jag...

I'd buy it but not as a daily... parade/event car and/or display.

A 1951 Pontiac as a daily driver, okay. I have small tip. Use the search function on Facebook marketplace to look for used Civics, Corollas and Camry cars in your area
