Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo Transmission Leak and Level check

Hi Scotty my name is Brittney and I am having some transmission problems I have watched your videos for quite a long time now you actually taught me how to drive a manual transmission just your explanation in the videos did it all.

My Automatic, 2008 4x4 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Laredo with a 3.7L Engine currently has 158,182 miles on it and has recently started leaking transmission fluid at a pretty high rate. I just bought this vehicle from a private owner and don’t know much about the history of it but long story short I need some advice. I got underneath and discovered where the front of the transmissions bellhousing meets up with the engine there was a gap there and upon tightening the bolts it closed the gap and stopped leaking. At this point I had already lost a lot of fluid (unsure how much) however there is no dipstick just a plug that says dealer use only I did remove that plug and add 2 quarts of transmission fluid after draining 2 quarts from one of the metal lines that lead into the side of the transmission (was the only way to drain anything that I can find because this is a sealed transmission) my question is this, Am I missing something because I can’t find a drain plug anywhere on the transmission and there isn’t one on the bottom of the transmission pan like in any videos I’ve watched? Do I have to remove the whole pan and drain it that way? Also the fluid that I did get out was very dark and gritty and As far as I can tell I don’t think it’s ever been changed. I think it would be better to simply check the fluid level and just add what is needed but I can’t for the life of me figure out how to do this. The numbers on the side of the transmission are as follows. T12TJ214760548 P52108421AD 421 AD. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon sincerely Brittney.

The pan has to be removed to drain the fluid.  There are aftermarket pans available that come with a drain plug to make it more convenient.  If you have a transmission fluid leak at the bell housing that was caused by a misalignment of the engine to transmission, it is likely that the transmission input shaft seal is compromised and needs replacement. Replace the fluid and the filter (inside the pan) at the same time.
