Hey Scotty- Just wanted to ask about the long term damage effects of using AT-205. I haven't used it yet due to a couple seriously concerning posts on what happened to their cars... I think one was a transmission, and Im not sure about the other. Most of the reviews are good...., but having a great respect for your experience in cars- what is your honest opinion on using it in my 1969 Stingray, matching numbers. I definately dont want to damage my classic. Thank you in advance for your response.

Respectfully,

Most of us here will tell you that stuff is, at the very best, a temporary bandaid if it works at all. On a car like that I would definitely do a proper repair and replace the leaking seal.

I would say it depends on what the seal is made of, and how much oil it leaks. If it's a rope seal like my '79 Catalina, it won't do really anything. They aren't solid rubber seals like newer cars that can swell. They're sealed with some kind of silicone-like product, and the crankshaft spinning in there for years wears the rope down. If it's a solid rubber seal and is cracked or broken, AT-205 won't have any noticeable effect. My Catalina has an intermittent oil leak in the rear end of the motor, sometimes it slings oil on the catalytic converter and it smolders, I suspect it's the rear main, it loses around a quart every 400 or so miles. I keep a fire extinguisher in the front seat, just in case.

Get yourself a service manual from RockAuto, you can get a digital copy of the OE service manual for $25 or less, that will give you an idea on the kind of seal and how tough it is to replace. I bought one for my Pontiac last year, I've more than gotten $25 worth of use out of it. 🙂
