Hi Scotty! I've got an 82 Honda Accord LX hatchback I want to restore for our daughters 16th bday. The 1.8L engine has 250K miles on it with a 5 spd trans, and smokes a little, so I figured on a rebuild, then adding the Weber 2 barrel carb conversion. The benefits are that it gets over 30 mph as long as you don't take her over 55. The cons are parts can be tough to get for future maintenance.
Should I just replace it with a more modern Honda engine instead? If so, what model? I'd like to stick with a manual trans as it's the best theft prevention device out there as kids today have no clue on how to drive a stick. A little more power might be nice but I don't need a rocket ship and I'm not looking to gold plate it.
Please help Scotty.
Thanx and best wishes from New Orleans!
Joe.
For your purpose, I would buy a newer model Civic or Accord with standard transmission. The mentioned car is 30 years old with a quarter milion miles, I don't think it is a good idea to give that car to a teenager.
More like 40 years old!
You're absolutely right. I thought it was 92.
The Civic Hatchback is already at the end of its lifespan. Using the money to rebuild would probably be the same as buying a used Honda. I would just buy a used Honda with a manual for that kind of money.
Your money would be better used to buy a newer model.
