Hello Scotty ! I have an 87 Honda Accord with 130k miles, Automatic transmission. I bought it for 450 bucks because the guy couldnt get it to stay running. All it needed was new spark plugs ! So my problem is that when you put it into D4 the car shakes a lot and slips back and forth from drive to neutral. The only way it can be driven is by shifting it manually. Please help !!

@austindavid
For an 87 that's some record low mileage. Are you saying the actual shift lever will move on its own out of drive? Or are you having to do that to keep the car from sputtering out at lower speeds? does it accelerate ok or shake on the lower 2nd gear and 3rd gear positions?

The shift lever stays in D4 but you can feel it slipping from drive to neutral. It only shakes in first gear when its in D4. Every other gear works fine and when its warmed up its like it wont shift from 4th down to 1st when coming to a stop.

If it's slips by itself and you can then force it manually to go from one gear to the next going from one to that would mean the transmission is breaking down internally. Block if you're lucky something like a motor monitor transmission mount could be broken and that's forcing the cable to be pulled by the engine or transmission motion and all you would need would be a new cable assembly

The gears work fine when its being shifted manually, would that be a sign its the trans pump or torque converter ? Or is the whole tranny junk ?
