Hi I drive a 1993 corolla with the 1.6l engine and 150k miles. I Drive about 120 miles per day commuting. I knew I was burning some oil but I recently tested in between topping off, and my car went from full after topping up with 2 quarts to empty in 475 miles. After topping it up again with another 2 quarts, the dipstick is at 1/4 after only 100 miles.
I also notice there is a black stain behind my parking pace at work as though oil has shot out of the tailpipe.
I am considering using thicker oil in the meantime (switching from 10w-30 to 20w-50)
I know these cars are known to have bad piston rings. All else is fine.
the real question is is this worth fixing? mioght it be something other than the rings?

Worth it to rebuild the engine, or install a rebuilt engine, in a 30-year-old Corolla? I very much doubt it. Finding a good used engine for a car that old would be a real challenge.

It could be worn cylinders, bad valve stem seals, and/or worn valve guides. You may have an oil leak but with that much consumption you'd see it dripping under the car. Simplest and cheapest thing would be a bad PCV valve but I don't think you'd experience so much oil loss just because of that.
