I have a manual 1994 golf GL project car with the 2.0 engine and 5 speed manual. Im restoring and rebuilding it to get more hands on learning experience and have a sweet little ride. Do you think it would be more worth to rebuild the 2.0 I currently have or to buy a VR6, rebuild that and swap it? It has 180,000 miles on it and so far I've changed the suspension, brake pads/rotors, tires, Belts, and fluid changes like oil, coolant, power steering, and brake fluid. Currently it has a rough idle where it drops low in rpms and comes back up and there's also a smell of gas. The transmission seems to shift smoothly but I will eventually attempt to rebuild that as well. THANK YOU!

My opinion, for DIY rebuilding try with current engine first.

It seems like a lot of money to put into such an old car if you are enthusiastic about it sure try some stuff out but I doubt it will be worth the money.
