I am linking to uploads of the recorded noise. I bought my 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with 4.0 with 145K for 3,000. It's needed very few repairs and has been very dependable, and with the quadratrak never blinked twice at snow. (My ex spun it around on ice making a turn in town.. through the ditch and into a telephone pole.. and cracked the plastic part of the bumper..but it backed right out and kept on going) For a while now it's had this whine.. I was thinking it was differential and figured with the mileage.. over 250K now, and the rust, that I'd run it until it broke and scrap it. Now I have a daughter who could use a vehicle for short trips.. 15 miles to town and back, and was considering letting her have it, but if this is a sign of impending trouble I don't want to do that to her, so let me know what you think. It shifts smooth, it is louder between 35 and 45 mph, when coasting if I shift it into Nuetral the whine gets very faint or goes away totally. (When I tested the nuetral, is when I changed my mind about it being in the differentials and now think it is in the transmission)
Thanks for reading,
Daniel
https://youtu.be/zpvJstf09fM shows it gets quiet when bumped into nuetral.
When was the last time you changed the oil in the differentials? Or the transfer case? Or the transmission? Ever??
Transmission had filter and fluids within the last 50K, nothing on differentials or transfer case, but I would think if it was in there the noise would not change when coasting in nuetral.
