Hey Scotty - Love the channel. I've got a 99 F-150 4.6L V8 with 130,000 miles (it was my grandpa's and he didn't drive it much). I'm pretty sure the suspension parts need to be replaced - when I go over bumps in the road, I hear a loud, kind of high-pitched rattling sound - like bb's in a tin can or something. I'm guessing some kind of bearing or something needs to be replaced, but I'm clueless on suspension matters.
Normally I wouldn't pay it much attention, but I just sold my 2017 Honda Civic to save some money for a 4Runner later on, and I will be driving this truck for a few months. It rides just fine, but it's quite rattly going down the road. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
With a truck that old, all the rubber parts are worn out and can make all sorts of noise. If I were you, I would check all the suspension parts first before changing the struts.
Thanks, appreciate the info!
Have a follow up - I just got the oil changed about a week ago, but I noticed that when I cranked it earlier, and also while driving, it was smoking. Assuming that's not a good sign.
What’s the smoke color?
It appeared to be white. Didn't seem to be running differently - it runs great, actually, for a 22 year old truck lol
Not a good sign. Check the head gasket using the test kit. Scotty has a video on that.
Yeah I was just looking around his channel, so I'll search for that specifically. Thanks 👍🏼
The smoke doesn't seem to be coming out constantly. I ordered the test kit that Scotty uses, so I'll see what happens with that. Was trying to save for a 4Runner - might have to get one sooner than planned lol
Hi again - did the head gasket test like in Scotty’s video and the liquid didn’t change color, so I guess that’s a good sign for the gasket. But it’s still smoking, so I’m not sure what to look at next. Any thoughts?
crawl under it and look around, i looked at a '93 today, the leaf spring hangers were almost rusted gone, all kinds of rust under there
Thanks, appreciate the info. I'll take a look under there for sure.
