Does it matter to put your car in N or P if we are stuck in traffic or a long signal light? Is it worth it does it matter if one has a Auto or a CVT auto transmission to go in P or N while stopped?
Thank you

Please try to stick to one question per post. Thanks.

Don't do it at traffic lights. It's a bad idea. Always be prepared to react to anything.

However, if I know I'll be waiting 5 minutes for a train to go by then yeah, I'll put it in 'P' (not N).

CVT's do not like being in 'N', or so I'm told.

Thank you all for the responses.

Another reason not to put the car in Park? The drivers behind you, when seeing your brake lights cease to shine, will think you are moving and accelerate into you. I had this happen in a car with a manual trans where I used the parking brake in stopped traffic.

I see people put their car in park at lights all the time and it drives me nuts. What gets my attention is their reverse lights come on in a situation where they shouldn't be on.

At lights, it would be not only pointless but also a safety risk as you would literally be unable to move in a hurry if needed.

For long wait times, like the aforementioned train, it is ok. But otherwise leave it in "D".
