- I'm looking at 2000 rav4 .6000 dollars. Mileage is 100000. Looks clean its at 83 auto in York Pa. Fwd 4 speed auto. I need reliable. Should I buy.? Love Toyota and Honda. Old is good. What do you think?
I need reliable
If you want something reliable why are you looking at a 25-year-old vehicle?
For that matter a used car dealer selling vehicles that old is almost guaranteed to be a ripoff artist selling junk picked up at auction. (That goes double if it's a BHPH dealer.) The claimed mileage is suspiciously low for something that old and would need to be verified. Rust is a problem with old vehicles in PA.
If you decide to proceed better have a good mechanic give that thing a very thorough examination before purchase. (Afterwards is too late.) If the seller won't permit that don't just walk away from the deal, run away.
@chucktobias thank you for input. I appreciate it. I am a believer that older vehicles were made better. In my experience. I do drive a 2010 ranger 97000 miles certified. Excellent shape. I guess i go by the way I take care of my vehicles. I will see about an independent mechanic looking. My mechanic is over hour away so it is out of question for him to check it over. Again I thank you.
Older vehicles were definitely made better, but you have to be prepared to deal with deterioration due to age. That can run into some $$$$ even on an otherwise reliable vehicle especially if you do not do your own repair work. Also when starting out with something that's 25 years old it may already have suffered serious neglect and damage before getting to you. You definitely should get a mechanic to check it out.
I drive cars older than that RAV4, in fact my daily driver is a 1997 model with nearly 375,000 miles. However I do all work on my vehicles myself except for a few items requiring special tools like wheel alignment. Not having to pay a mechanic for every little thing that goes wrong makes a big difference in the economics of driving an old vehicle.
