2000 Chevy Silverado (140k miles) wont start on a damp day. Been a problem for years. Once it does start it runs great. Recently I attempted to start it but it wouldnt start after numerous cranking attempts, which also drained a new battery. Now, when trying to start it the engine make a "thud" noise when trying to start. What did I break trying to crank it so many times?

Any ideas on why the difficulty starting it during damp or rainy days?

change the coil, dizzy cap and plug wires.

You can't break an engine cranking it over. But you certainly can break the starter. Of course realize if an engine locks up it can lock up at any time. So try to turn the engine using a long extension bar in a socket on the front crank bolt and if you can't physically turn the engine yeah then it's locked up but that had nothing to do with cranking it many times

Thanks for reply! Any ideas on why the difficulty starting it during damp or rainy days?

rainy = water = electric problem, propably starter or cables, might be even battery cables, or computer wires etc ......
