Hello! Love the channel.
- question: I recently bought a 2000 Honda CR-V. After taking it to a car wash the driver rear break seemed to lock up. Also got a p0501 code.
When I took it to the mechanic they said the P0501 code was cleared because the speedometer sensor seemed fine but while they were test driving it they got a code for misfiring cylinder. They said it’s not the spark plugs, probably the distributor. They also said the back break cylinder is leaking and they need to replace all the hardware. They want $1000! Is the leaking break cylinder very important to fix??
A wheel cylinder should only be about $20 or you can rebuild them.
Is it important? If you don't want your brake fluid leaking out & then smashing into other cars, then yes.
Correction - it appears they're even cheaper now, $10.
Replace the wheel cylinder and bleed the brakes. I'll do it for $500. The mechanic is ripping you off. Me too!
Hey' I'll do it for $400 and I'd still be ripping the guy off! 😉
Exactly right @chucktobias. Wait, now I'll do it for $300.
Hey, I'll replace the $8.00 wheel cylinders, $7.00 hardware kit, and $12.00 brake shoes (rockauto.com prices) for only $250!
{pear}
You are HIRED!
I'll do it for $243.29 AND throw in a free air freshener (my choice of scent).
How can you beat that?
What is the mechanism that makes them unnecessary for disc brakes?
The "wheel cylinders" for disc brakes are in the calipers.

that's a nice animation of drum brakes. I'm so happy not to have to deal with them anymore.
GTK. Thx. @chucktobias.
For those that have replaced a wheel cylinder, how hard is the job with respect to replacing disc brakes, or replacing rear struts? Just looking to understand the difficulty level.
Also, just googling around, it seems wheel cylinders are only used for drum brakes? What is the mechanism that makes them unnecessary for disc brakes?
Watch this to geta n idea of whats involved

Grazie
Drum brakes are conceptually simple but the springs and adjusters are a bit of a pain to deal with. (I personally hate working on them.)
Disc brakes, struts, easy stuff if it's not welded together by rust/bolts don't break off.
Drum brakes on the other hand....have you ever seen the pic of the burning monk?
That's actually me once I find out a car I accepted to work on has drums. Only way to get out of the job🤣
Thanks fir the personal insight folks.
The same thing that makes drum brakes work, hydraulic pressure.
